Frequently Asked Questions

How long does patent registration take in Russia?

Typically 18–30 months from filing to grant, depending on the complexity of the invention and the examination workload at Rospatent. Utility models are faster — usually 6–12 months. We keep you updated throughout.

What is Eurasian Patent and how many countries does it cover?

A Eurasian patent is granted by the Eurasian Patent Office (EAPO) and is valid in all member states of the Eurasian Patent Convention: Russia, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan — 8 countries with a single application.

Can a foreigner apply for a patent in Russia directly?

Yes, but Russian law requires foreign applicants to be represented by a registered Russian patent attorney. You cannot file directly with Rospatent without a local representative. Our firm acts as your official representative throughout the entire process.

What is the difference between a patent and utility model?

A utility model (“petty patent”) has a lower inventive step requirement, a shorter registration period (up to 10 years), and a much faster examination process. It’s ideal for protecting incremental improvements and devices where speed to market matters.
